Learning to navigate complexity, uncertainty, and volatility asks us first to view the world systemically: to understand the world as alive, dynamic and ever-changing, and then see ourselves as alive, dynamic, and ever-changing. Learning is, therefore, not the handover of understandings of the world, it is the process of cultivating the ability to be in the world as it changes. Learning is the process of developing, flourishing and evolving.
Rebecca and Anna will share how this approach comes alive at the School of System Change - through their action inquiry approach, through their curriculum and how that is supported through their handbook- a resource for other learning facilitators and educators who wish to work across the multi-method of systems change field and take a learning is change approach.
As the School is interested in how they connect and work with the wider ecosystem, Anna and Rebecca will bring their current inquiries into this shared space to consider together the edges of systems change practices, the narrative inquiry of change and what this all means for the current education system.

About the Speakers
Dr Anna Birney, CEO School of System Change
Anna is a senior leader, facilitator and coach with extensive experience in systems change, transformation and learning across NGOs, Foundations, Communities, Government, business and across a wide number of social and environmental sectors, including Education, Health, Climate, Marine, Food, Energy and Placed based change both in the UK and across the globe.
With this experience of applying a wide range of systemic practices and processes to change and cultivating the emerging field of systems change practice, in 2016 she founded the School of System Change - who seek to cultivate the collective ability of people, organisations and society to embrace and deal with complexity in our changing world. Nurturing a new systemic paradigm of how we deliver change, committed to learning as change and working to transform the relationships of power towards a just and regenerative future.
Anna has a PhD in Cultivating Systems Change from Lancaster University and a diploma in action research from Bath University. She is a creator, writer and designer of curriculum, articles, a book and learning materials which informs her teaching and facilitation.
Rebecca Warren, Head of Learning Programmes, School of Systems Change
Rebecca has worked extensively in the education sector, working in state, private and international schools, as well as in international youth programmes. She has held roles in school leadership teams, curriculum development and design, safeguarding and programme implementation, but all united by the aim to support young people to make a positive contribution to their communities and beyond.
Rebecca was introduced to systems change work through the Compassionate Systems in Schools work, and then through a broader engagement in her desire to challenge our outdated education system. She joined the School of System Change just over 6 months ago, embracing Learning is Change as both a synthesis and extension of her previous work.
